Nairobi Baptist Church
Rooted In The Word

One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.  He first went for his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).  He brought him to Jesus… (John 1:40-42a)

Andrew found the Lord and went to look for his own brother to let him know of the good news. After all, this was the great anticipation of Israel in those days – ‘the Messiah’.  Luke 2:25-35 describes to us this anticipation from the perspective of Simeon as one who lived purposely for the “Consolation of Israel” and upon seeing baby Jesus, he said, “… now let your servant depart in peace, for my eyes have seen your salvation, a light for revelation to the Gentiles…”

Such is the great privilege, of getting to meet and know the Messiah personally and the inevitable joy, which results in the proclamation of the same. Andrew does the most logical thing by first going to tell the good news to his brother Simon Peter. Most likely, they had grown up in the same home, sharing the same values, challenges and interests and therefore Andrew knew the what, and the how of sharing with Simon Peter about the Messiah.

When Jesus commissioned the disciples to take the Gospel to the whole world, he instructed them to begin at Jerusalem, a place they knew and understood the people with their values and cultural norms.  They were to begin from the known to the unknown.

As we begin our next journey after fifty years of ministry, we are calling all members  of the Nairobi Baptist Church, back to the basics again, namely; Jerusalem. Because it is in Jerusalem, where our immediate and extended family members live, we go to schools/colleges, get employed and interact with workmates and customers on a daily basis and dwell among neighbours.

Therefore, it is in this context and in consideration of Jesus’ strategy of world evangelism that we are calling those of us who have found the Messiah, to like Andrew, go back and share the good news with our family members, work colleagues, neighbours and schoolmates with the aim of bringing them to Jesus.

No one person is sufficiently equipped to fully disciple those that come to know Jesus, and hence the genius of the establishment of the local Church. In a Church you will find all kinds of people with God given gifts and talents essential for equipping and establishing new believers. We therefore, encourage you not only to reach out to your Jerusalem, but also to refer those whom you lead to the Lord to a local Church where they can experience and see God’s love in the wider body of Christ.
